Switch

Unmanaged for most homes and small offices: plug in and it works, with no setup. A managed switch, such as the Uniview NSW3000, adds VLANs, QoS, link aggregation, loop detection and port mirroring, and can be managed from the cloud, web or app. It suits larger offices and CCTV sites that need to separate traffic or monitor ports.

Gigabit if you can. Fast Ethernet ports run at 100Mbps, enough for browsing and printers. Gigabit ports run at 1000Mbps, better for internet plans above 100Mbps, file sharing and NVRs. TP-Link LS1008G, TL-SG1016D and Uniview NSW1010 models are Gigabit; LS1005, LS1008 and TL-SF1024D are Fast Ethernet.

A PoE switch sends power and data on the same network cable, so IP cameras and ceiling access points need no separate power adapter. The Jovision JVS-S10-8P-120W and HRUI HR903-AF-82Y-80 each have 8 PoE ports plus 2 uplinks, with 120W and 80W total power budget.

Count every wired device you have now, add a few for later, and add one port for the cable to your router. We stock 5, 8, 16 and 24-port switches; the 16 and 24-port TP-Link models can be mounted in a rack.
